Sexual Harassment

Inappropriate  부적당 한      Dilemma 진퇴 양난                  Harassment 괴롭힘              Mandate 위임       declare   선언

http://thegrandnarrative.com/2011/01/11/korea-sexual-harassment/

Ask your partner the question. Write down their answer. Work together to make complete sentences.
1.
Imagine that a friend confides in you that he or she has been a victim of sexual harassment. What would you say to your friend? What would you tell your friend to do about the harassment?
2.
Suppose a boy repeatedly tells a girl, in public, that she has a great figure. While at first the girl is flattered, when he keeps talking about her figure publicly, she becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Do you think she has reason to feel uncomfortable? Is this an example of sexual harassment or positive attention? In Korean culture, do you think it is easy to confuse the two? Give reasons to support your ideas.
3.
Do you think there is a relationship between self-esteem and sexual harassment? Do you think people with low self-esteem would be more likely to be the harasser, the victim, or both? Give facts to support your ideas.

From a survey in Singapore
  • 54% (272) had experienced some form of workplace sexual harassment.
  • 27% of the 272 respondents experienced harassment by their colleague, while 17% were harassed by their superior.
  • 79% of the victims are women; 21% were men.
  • 12% had received threats of termination if they did no comply with the requests of the sexual harassers.

    lfare Course Policy

You are expected to behave appropriately in your class.  This means:

    ·         Turn off your cellular phone.
    ·         Pay attention to the teacher.
    ·         Do not talk when your teacher or your classmates are talking.
    ·         Participate in class.  If the teacher asks you a question, try to answer it.
    ·         Bring your book, pencil, paper and dictionary to class every day.

    Attendance:

It is university policy that students attend every class.  Failure to attend class will lower a student's final grade.  No one can expect to improve their English if they do not come to class.  If a student is late for class 3 times, it will count as 1 absence.  If a student is absent, they MUST talk to their Department Head and obtain an excused absence form.  That form must then be given to the instructor.
    HWC Attendance Policy
    1) Make sure every student comes to class on time. Attendance should be checked and recorded by class on Next-Generation Synthesis System (http://was.wsu.ac.kr).
    2) Absences are exempted for the following cases when official documents are submitted. Other than these seven cases, any other absences are not excused.
① One day trip or round trip in a day in order to redeem national obligation
② One day trip or round trip in a day in order to participate in any events or official tests which are permitted by the President of the Univ.
③ Five days for the loss of a parent
④ Five days for the loss of a grandparent
⑤ Five days on the occasion of the student’s marriage
⑥ One day on the occasion of parent’s 60th birthday
⑦ When hospitalized or an emergency caused by diseases or accidents
    3) Over 30 minute tardiness is counted as absence.
    4) Three times of tardiness is counted as one absence.
    5) Class absence over one-third of the course is graded as F.
    6) When a student is out of the classroom without the professor’s permission, it will be treated as absence.

If you miss a class, it is YOUR responsibility to make up any classwork.

    Grading:

    Attendance = 20%
    Homework/Participation and/or Project = 20%
    Midterm exam  = 20%
    Final exam  =40%

    Grading Distribution Scale (Curving)

This class will use the grade distribution scale in accordance with the University policy. It is applicable to all freshman, sophomore and junior classes offered by the Dept. of General English regardless of class size.

    Evaluation
    1) Relative evaluation will be practiced along with the level different classes. The grade rate of HWC students will be noticed and observed following the school policy.
    2) In case the professor found a quite different level gap of a student in the class, s/he should be moved to an upper level class. When the student stays in the lower level class than his or her original level, s/he cannot be given more than score B0.
    3) Except for an inevitable situation, the student who is over 10 minutes late for testing will be given score 0.
    5) The decision of holdover for low achievement students will be made in the meeting of English professors after the final term.

This course will have two exams: a Midterm Exam and a Final Exam. The instructor may also administer quizzes or other assignments at any time during the course. Homework and Participation will be assessed at the discretion of the instructor as per standard Woosong policy.
